April 2018: Getting Up Early

Happy Easter everyone! I hope everyone had a relaxing bank holiday weekend, whatever you have been up doing. I am back to work today and so am having to adjust my body clock back into getting up early. This brings me on to today’s topic.

For today’s blog, I wanted to share with you my routine of getting up early and how that helps me to achieve my goals for my day. People have different times at which they work best and when they like to get things done. For me though, I like to structure my day so that I get the most important things done first before the rush of the day begins.

For example, I am working from home today and before I begin my work or check my work e-mails, I am writing this blog. Why? Because it is my most important task for today and therefore needs to be allocated priority time.

Now, for some people it may be that they like to work late into the night and then wake up later. That is great if it suits you but a thousand things are likely to happen in the course of the day and the brain will be trying to keep track of all of them. So, this is why I find this quiet time early on in the day, a good time to do the most important thing to me: writing (doing this blog for today’s instance).

Now I say that I am working from home today and so it’s easy for me to just sit in my living room and do this now. Usually though, I will get up very early just so that I can arrive at work early before the rush of people travelling and find a nice quiet spot at work to do my writing; I can then concentrate on my work tasks.

As for the weekends, I often have many plans, social-and sport- based, but again I follow a similar pattern. I will get up reasonably early on Saturday, do some writing (whether that is a couple of pages, planning a chapter, proof reading my work or writing a blog) before the day gets busy.

It’s also a case of understanding how I work and what is best for me. If I were to leave my writing to the evening, my drive to be a writer would probably still be enough to make me do this in the evening but I would  probably not  be producing  the same quality of work; I would find it more tedious and likely be less productive,  as there would also be a risk of more distraction as the day goes on.

So, the main point I am trying to convey is that whatever your main area of focus / goal is in life, understand yourself and find the best time to work for you. A great quote that I’ve heard in the past is “There is always time to do the most important things”. This is completely true no matter how busy your life is. People will often say “I never have time to do that”; more often than not, this is an excuse for something that is too much hard work for them or involves a change in routine. Allocating time, even if getting up ten minutes earlier, will provide you with a chance to work on what you want.
