Hello and welcome to my March blog. I am writing this whilst I am travelling across New Zealand, which is very beautiful but requires a lot of travelling. Whilst I am here, I have seen many magnificent views and sites, including the wonderful Hobbiton and Weta Workshop in Wellington; places such as these have helped me think of ideas for my next book. This brings me on to my latest book which I just have started to write but have yet to name; so, for today’s blog, I am going to discuss the theme: Borderline Personality Disorder.
My three books so far have been fictional stories aimed at ages nine and upwards. I enjoy the adventure, the fantasy and using the unlimited power of my imagination. This latest book has these elements in it too but a friend of mine requested that I write about borderline personality disorder. Therefore, I decided to create another fictional book but this time, with a main character having a borderline personality disorder.
When my friend requested that I write a book for him, I felt honoured and of course, thought it was a great idea to focus on borderline personality disorder as a central theme. There are many reasons for this: I could enable readers to have an awareness of borderline personality disorder; I could also really explore the emotions and mindset of another character to create a story; I could write a story specific to something someone has requested from me.
As a result, I have decided once again, to use first person to get into the mindset of the main character, just as I did in my last book: The Edge of Perfection. My aim is to enable the reader to go on a journey with Callum (the main character), experiencing his thoughts and feelings as someone with borderline personality disorder. Writing in first person has also helped me to understand more about borderline personality disorder.
I have been fortunate not to have suffered what both Callum and my friend have suffered but in order to gain a better understanding of this condition, I have done substantial research on it, as well as liaising with my friend to learn more of what it means to have borderline personality disorder. My friend regularly tells me how excited he is about the release of this book and helping readers to understand more about the issues people with borderline personality disorder face on a daily basis.
I too am excited for when this book is finished (although I am a few months off, at this point). This is perhaps the most excited I have been since I started writing, as I feel that the book will not only allow the reader to experience the adventure and fantasy I always strive to create but also the mindset and challenges of an individual with a personality disorder, who has to face a tough world of daily challenges.
