Hello and a happy new year to you all. I hope that you had a great Christmas and a good time celebrating the new year. For me, I spent time at home with friends and family before starting my new job in project management on Tuesday. It was certainly a good break before getting into the swing of things again.
New Year is often a time for resolutions, something I’m not sure about myself. A resolution these days seems to imply that because it is a new year, then we need to change something, often for just a few weeks. I am of the belief that no matter what time of year it is, I always want to improve myself no matter what the area. To do that, I must make sure that many things are in place and that brings me onto today’s topic, diet!
A diet is something that we should continually take care of (not just for January), in order to gain the physical and mental benefits in our life. If we have a good diet then we will benefit in so many ways. In my instance, eating the right foods helps my brain function for activities such as my writing or my ability to perform my best in the gym.
One of the most important parts of my day is the start of it. Starting as I mean to go on: the key to this is a great breakfast. I often hear people say that they didn’t have breakfast as they didn’t have time. There is always time for the most important things, and breakfast should certainly be a priority, even if it involves you getting up ten minutes earlier. Having a good breakfast has many benefits such as being more alert, helping the brain function well, getting the metabolism going and preventing too much snacking throughout the day as a result. My breakfast is my biggest meal of the day by far.
Later in the day, I make sure that I have a decent lunch and dinner too, in addition to two/three snacks in the day. I also drink plenty of water to keep hydrated. I realise that this all makes me sound like I eat healthily all the time. Although I try to eat and drink well for most of the week, allowing me to feel good and as far as possible, to be on top of everything, I still allow myself treats. So, for example, at weekends I allow myself the odd chocolate bar or occasional take- away. We are all human, so of course, we want treats; so by allowing myself these from time to time, this reduces the craving for treats whilst at the same time, ensuring that most of your diet is healthy.
So in summary, there are many benefits, both mentally and physically, from having a good diet (which starts from a hearty breakfast). I like to do my writing early in the morning before I start work, so having a great breakfast helps me focus both on this and throughout the rest of the day. I would recommend a good diet to anyone; it really will make you feel fantastic, but of course, do allow yourself an occasional treat. It may sound strange that a fictional writer should be writing about nutrition, but nutrition is one of the things that certainly helps me to get the best out of myself for my writing.
I hope that you all have a great rest of January, and as usual, if you have any questions around this blog, feel free to get in contact.
