Hello readers. I hope that you are enjoying / looking forward to your holidays now that we are in June. For those readers who have upcoming exams over this period – best of luck. I too had to do two exams last week for a project management Agile accreditation, which is not always much fun but it feels satisfying afterwards.
I have just finished the third draft of my book, with a couple more drafts to go and then I will soon be ready to release it. On the subject of today’s blog, I wanted to discuss my experience of writing a fictional story, which contains a deeper meaning, about the psychological mind of a young man with borderline personality disorder, as opposed to the writing of my previous books.
I first of all, I found that I had to do a lot more research before starting this book. This involved speaking to a friend who asked me to write it, researching support sites online and Youtube videos of people discussing their experiences. I found all this very insightful in helping me to understand my main character as well as to write the story.
My second finding is that I have received a lot of positive comments from individuals, when telling them I am writing this book. In particular, the friend who asked me to write the book, is really excited about a story on borderline personality but also a few other people that I know with borderline personality disorder, have also expressed their excitement about this book.
My third finding is that this is the saddest and darkest of my four books. Although I try and put some happier / more positive scenes in it, I do want to portray what the disorder can be like, so as a result I have had to write some rather dark and scary scenes. Again, when researching and asking about borderline personality disorder, I found this sadness and darkness is very much a common experience for those individuals. So, this is what I aim to show to the reader.
Finally, I have learned that actually writing stories with a character with real life, underlying mental challenges is something I want to do more in the future. It serves as an education for me and for my readers and can increase empathy for those who go through such day to day life with these kinds of challenges.
I hope to have completed or be close to completion of the publication of my next book in July. Until then I hope that you all continue to have a great summer.
