This is a question that came up frequently during my recent research interviews. I wanted to share how I approach this in my episodes, during my initial podcast launch, and when mentoring others on the subject.
For me, it aligns closely with business. Here are my key points:
- Choose a Niche
Focus on something specific and easily understandable. Avoid vague topics like “I help everyone.” Instead, target one particular type of person or audience. A great starting point is to reflect on yourself a couple of years ago—what would have resonated with you then? - Have a Passion for It
You’ll be podcasting regularly about this topic, so choose something you’re passionate about. While your interests may evolve over time, pick a subject you can commit to discussing for at least a year. - Ensure There’s Demand
One of the biggest mistakes I’ve made—and seen others make—is choosing a topic close to your heart but with little audience interest or demand. To avoid this, list a few topics you’re interested in and research their popularity. Tools like ChatGPT can help you explore whether a topic has an active and engaged audience or is currently trending. - Study the Top Podcasts
Take a look at the top podcasts in your niche. What are they about? Get curious, listen to them, and learn from their approach. - Decide Between Multiple Topics
If you’re torn between a couple of ideas, ask yourself which one is more popular while also aligning with your passions. If you feel equally passionate about both, I recommend choosing the topic with broader appeal or higher demand.
Choosing a podcast topic can feel overwhelming, so grab some paper and a pen and work through these questions. Remember, clarity will help you move forward with confidence.
Happy podcasting!
